This is to keep the engine from falling out when removing the subframe. The brackets that actually attach to the engine are special tools specifically for this engine family (m176, m177, m178). In this case, the engine was the only major component still in the vehicle, but you’ve seen pictures of that already in my last post.
Still not done in case you’re curious. Maybe at 75% now. Haven’t had a ton of time to work on it.

I am sure a C300 isn’t this bad, please tell me a C300 isn’t this bad.

Compare.
I probably have less money — $3500 — in that entire car than the “special tool” you’re using cost.

It uses v-bands on the intake tubes?

That’s the exhaust coming off of the turbos.

Lol this is nothing. It’s just a fancy version of a generic too you can pick up at any parts store. But no, to answer your question, nothing else we have is anywhere near this difficult. Certainly not a C300. But this wasn’t even a defect, this is all because of a gorilla stripping the oil pan drain plug threads. Can’t repair them without cracking the pan on this car.

That looks like something they’d make on Project Binky to align the wipers or something.

Don’t know what that is, but we do have wiper alignment tools!

It’s like if Ed China and James May had a cousin with awesome pro fabrication skills.

Cool!
I always love seeing the dichotomy between things designed to be seen and things designed for pure function by the same company.

THIS is what is required to swap out an oil pan? They German engineered the shit out of that thing.

Maybe I’ll check it out later when I’m not supposed to be working

For sure. And the way it’s not just functional design for it’s intended purpose, but they design serviceability into that function as well.

Check out my previous post on it. But yeah, only this car though. Everything else is pretty normal oil pan stuff. But this is a dry sump with a torque tube.

I read your other posts, that sucks that are basically redoing stuff you already did.
Also I am somewhat relieved.

It was a slow start for me, but once I got into it, I watched them all and could probably watch again. The fabrication is pretty amazing. I later learned that they only come out every few months because they currently haven’t finished the car. But I am sure they will. Eventually.

It does, but at least I know what I’m doing now!
Base C-classes are solid, you shouldn’t worry.

I used to really dig shows like that, but now that I can do it all myself, fab included, it doesn’t interest me as much. Doesn’t mean it isn’t cool lot that I don’t respect it though. But it’s like watching someone do an oil change.

I guess that’s where it does appeal to me. I can do a lot, so long as it involves mostly standard hand tools or power tools. Welding and metal fabrication, nope. I have friends who can do that, but I don’t have the space, the equipment, or the experience.
Anyway I can’t wait to see this thing all completed.
Cheers, regardless!
